There May be Hope Yet March 12, 2007

It looks like some good news on doping in pro cycling is finally happening. After all the fur flying last summer from Operation Puerto to Floyd’s positive test the following article seems to be fairly positive.

UCI unveils new anti-doping program

The part I find most interesting is this bit:

The
program calls for individual blood and hormone profiles to be created
for selected riders, with those numbers to be used a baseline for
comparison with other samples taken during the season. Licensed
professionals will also be required to agree to provide a sample of
their DNA if necessary.”

Set up some baselines for the riders, heck of an idea. I’m surprised this hasn’t been done sooner. It just makes sense, if you get a baseline established it should be easier to determine what is normal vs not normal for a rider. Although there is still potential for trying to beat the system, a fact we’ll never get away from, if I was a pro I would want a baseline to help determine what was normal for myself.

Now one thing I’d like to see them address next is handling of the samples. There has got to be a better a way, with all the leaking done by LNDD of results etc. I’m surprise they’re still accredited. Why would you trust results from a lab that appears to be violating all kinds of protocols. Maybe they should be investigated also.

Cheers!

Almost Spring Training March 11, 2007

Over the past of days the weather has started to get in Edmonton and that means almost spring. You can tell by the melting snow, people wearing shorts in +2 temps, huge puddles, and of course pot holes. Now over the past few months I’ve been busy peddling away on my trainer at home and getting beat up at spin classes twice a week. With a little luck we’ll be out on the road a few weeks, manditory spring dump of snow not with standing. I can hardly wait.

So a few things to get done, get this years racing license, secondary membership in EMCC, get a few tires and the ride tuned up. I’m looking forward to fresh prairies air and pot hole dodging, Which brings me to another point. Why is it with a province supposedly swimming in cash are the roads in such poor shape? It boogles the mind. An friend of mine says the city’s have gotten screwed by provincial government. This is the same person who thinks the PC’s can;t do anything wrong. Whatever the reason Ihope they can do a few road repairs this year. It sure was sweet riding on sections of Anthony Henday drive before they were open to cars, what a treat.

Cheers!
