Duck’s Can’t Survive Oil Spill, but Can Whyte Avenue? May 25, 2006

Ruptured DucksTonight the Oilers have a chance to make it to the Stanley Cup Final, probably the worst kept secret in Canada. A win tonight will ensure a celebration for all the fans, despite the weather. From where I live, I don't need to watch the game to know who won, I can hear the cheering from Whyte Avenue in the house. Over the course of the playoffs the celebration has been a cause of concern for people and businesses in the area. I can't say that I disagree, especially after the riot we had a few years back on Canada Day. But I figure if there are people who cause trouble, they will do it no matter what.

In a way its a shame the outpouring of the fans delight can be marred so quickly by a few idiots. I recall being a the celebrations on Jasper Avenue after an Oiler Stanely Cup win in 80's and it was a hoot. From what I remember a good time was had by all, although I sure there where probably a few people who got arrested. But I don't think there was vandalism of business property, I could be wrong. I've seen some comments in the local news rags from people saying that business owners and residents in the area should just "suck it up" as this doesn't happen all the time. I wonder if these same people would be saying the same thing if it was in thier backyard. At anyrate I hope the Oilers fans don't degenerate to level of holiganism that scoccer fans in Europe can get to. If the Oilers win tonight enjoy a celebration but show some civic pride by not wrecking Whyte Ave in the process.

Here's good luck to the Oilers

T-Bones Rare is a name my trombone playing buddies and I use for a trombone quartet, well 3 bones and a tuba, that gets together really infrequently these days. We came up with the name one Tuesday night jam session at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton. We where planning on a gig and needed a name and that's what we came up with. Made sense to us at the time, might have had something to do with all the Traditional Ale we were drinking. Anyhow we've used the name ever since.
